Do You Need an International Driving Permit to Ride a Scooter in Bali?

This is one of the most-searched questions before a Bali trip, and for good reason: the answer affects your safety, your wallet, and whether your travel insurance actually covers you.

Short answer: if you're a foreign tourist, you legally need both your valid home-country motorcycle license and a matching International Driving Permit (IDP) to ride a scooter in Bali. Renting a scooter doesn't require these documents from every rental company, but riding on public roads does, and those are two separate things.

Why does the IDP matter if a rental company doesn't ask for it?

Because a rental company checking your ID and taking your booking is a private transaction. What a police checkpoint asks for is a legal matter, and that's on you as the rider, not on the rental company. Checks have picked up in popular tourist areas too, Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, and Uluwatu are the ones that come up most often, and not being able to produce a valid license plus IDP at one of those checkpoints can mean an on-the-spot fine.

There's also a bigger risk hiding behind that one: travel insurance. A lot of policies won't cover an accident claim if the rider didn't hold a legally valid license and permit for that vehicle at the time. For a scooter accident with injuries, that's a real financial risk, not just paperwork.

What does "matching" actually mean for my IDP?

Your IDP needs to cover the same vehicle category as your home license. A car-only license with a car-only IDP doesn't cover a scooter. If your home license includes motorcycles, make sure the IDP you apply for reflects that before you travel, it's not something you can sort out after you've already landed in Bali.

What if I've ridden without one before?
